Marty Gallagher: Estrogenic poisoning is our modern society's most under-diagnosed malady. In western society, most particularly the United States, the unnaturalness of the foods we eat, the drinks we drink, and the unending, never-ending exposure to chemicals has had the untended consequence of producing massive amounts of estrogen, that most feminine of hormones; an overabundance of which turns normal people into sickly obese people.

Excess estrogen makes men weak and enhances feminine physiological characteristics. Some unfortunate men are so estrogen-drenched that over time they actually morph into chemically castrated, impotent eunuchs. Excess estrogen in women has a poisoning effect; amplifying physiologic feminine characteristics to such a degree those women suffer a disproportional share of distaff diseases....gland and ovary inflammations, organ and glandular flame-out, cancerous growths and the like...all these health catastrophes take root and thrive in a fetid hothouse of excess estrogen.

Care to see the future? Go to the local shopping mall; proceed to the Food Court and watch all ages and genders congregate, herd-like, to obtain their estrogenic fix. Make no mistake about it; those that develop a taste for the shocking, ultra-amped-up manmade refined foods develop addictions every bit as deep-seated and unhealthy as a heroin or crystal meth habit. Estrogen-producing foods are to be avoided; overeating manmade food and artificial drinks for protracted periods turns the human body into an estrogen-producing factory.  Industrial foods are the culprit.

At the food court, the estrogen-addicts sit walrus-like; thighs and buttocks spilling over and completely obscuring the red plastic mall chairs. They munch contentedly on a wide variety of fast foods, entrees, drinks and deserts. The food court at the shopping mall is a veritable temple to junk food, a chemical smorgasbord of intense taste sensations.

Overweight individuals might kick off a mall meal with a round of greasy egg roll appetizers from the Chinese fast food concession stand. The mall egg rolls are pale imitations of the original Cantonese delicacies: those handmade wrappers of ethereal delicacy were stuffed with fresh, local, seasonally appropriate vegetables and free-range chicken, pork or duck. The original egg rolls were succulent; made-from-scratch gourmet appetizers and hardly the culinary catastrophe that is a mall egg roll.

Every component of the mall egg rolls is unnatural. Produced in a factory by a team of men and machines using ingredients marinated in chemicals, preservatives and toxins by the bucketful, the factory egg roll is shipped frozen and pickled with more chemicals than a mummified pharaoh. These culinary Frankensteins are bought to life by thawing them out and throwing them into a steamer. The chemical egg roll has enough MSG to blast through the most deadened of taste buds and more often than not patrons soak them in another estrogenic nightmare: soy sauce.

Chris Hardy, D.O. MPH:  Here are some depressing facts to start our conversation off with...

  • In 2005 the World Health Organization reported 1.6 billion overweight adults with 400 million classified as clinically obese.
  • Research estimates that sperm counts in adult males are decreasing 1.5% a year in the United States.
Overweight and obese people don't have the hunger "off-switch" that leaner people do. Over time repeated fast food meals create a dysfunction. The off-switch is a hormone called leptin. Fat tissue secretes leptin. In non-obese individuals leptin is spurted into the bloodstream by fat tissue where it binds at the hypothalamus, signaling the brain that the body has had enough to eat: leptin induces satiety.

Large fat stores in obese people produce very large amounts of leptin. One would think they would never be hungry but interestingly, the leptin signaling doesn't work well for these people.  Recent research suggests that many obese/overweight people are leptin-resistant. These large fast food meals do not produce satiety in the overweight and obese.  Fast food consumption creates hunger.

There are leptin receptors in testicular tissue involved in regulating reproduction.  Constantly high leptin levels (as seen in the obese) disrupt sperm production and testosterone production.

Not all this grief can be laid at the feet of fast food".  The giant soda is a horrific thing to feed to children. Fast food and drink creates a vicious cycle: we over-eat the wrong foods at the wrong time in the wrong amounts and create obesity.

Being obese dramatically spikes estrogen production while lowering testosterone and eventually causes infertility. Given the current diet of the average male adolescent, sperm counts and testosterone levels will continue to plummet.

Marty Gallagher:
Those that live on fast food have damaged taste bud receptors. Those that eat fast food often batter and overwhelm the taste receptors located on the tongue and inside the mouth. Only the strongest possible tastes, most outrageous, outlandish and ostentatious foods make any kind of sensory taste impression on the palate of the fast food junkie.

Fast food devotees sacrifice their taste buds on the chemical altar of their taste fetishes. Because of the destruction of taste buds, only the sweetest, saltiest, hottest, sourest or bitterest of taste sensations register anything at all. Taste sensation can be reacquired after an extended period of detoxification.

Back to the Mall Meal: The egg roll appetizer is then followed by the second estrogen-drenched course. Perhaps pizza slices or a fat calzone. These taste delights are purchased from the mall "Italian" restaurant. Estrogenic dough bombs are created in giant vats in some far away factory. The chemically radiant dough is then stamped into a molded form, frozen and shipped. The tomato sauce is canned and weak and chock full of preservatives. The "cheese" isn't really cheese; the sausage and pepperoni aren't really meats, rather "pressed parts," discarded bits and pieces compressed into compliant shape by a molding machine. The meat is of the lowest possible quality yet delicious to those with destroyed taste receptors.

The mall parmesan cheese is a mixture of cheese remnants and glue-glop binders. A 32-ounce soda is used to wash down the "meal" and let us not forget to eat a food court desert. Perhaps a cinn-a-bun; super sweet cinnamon-sugar is infused inside and atop a fake bun made with fake dough. The cinn-a-bun is slathered in sugar glaze goop that is just this side of radioactive. The mall meal is now complete.

Chris Hardy:  Most artificial ingredients are not directly estrogenic in and of themselves. Processed foods lead to obesity and once critical obesity mass is attained, the large fat mass begins producing significant amounts of estrogen. Here is how it works...

  • Adipose tissue, body fat, is now thought of as an endocrine organ. Body fat used to be thought of as dead, lifeless tissue. Not so anymore; modern science has discovered that body fat is itself an endocrine organ, secreting hormones much like the traditional endocrine organs such as the pituitary and adrenal glands. Fat actually "communicates" with (and can disrupt the function of) traditional endocrine and reproductive organs.

  • Adipose tissue secretes leptin. Adipose tissue creates an enzyme called aromatase that converts testosterone into estrogen. The amount of body fat a person possesses is directly proportional to the amount of aromatase enzyme present: the more obese the individual the easier for them to convert testosterone into estrogen.
  • The end result? Increased estrogen and lowered testosterone.

Obesity creates an estrogen production factory. Extra aromatase converts a substantial amount of testosterone into estrogen. The high insulin levels that accompany obesity cause a decrease in the amount of protein called "sex-hormone binding globulin."  A decrease in this estrogen-binding protein means more estrogen in the bloodstream.  It's a hormonal coup against your reproductive system.

Marty Gallagher: The three thousand calories ingested in this single mall meal is hardly atypical; we could create caloric and chemical food court equivalents with the greatest of ease: substitute French fries for egg rolls, substitute burgers for pizza and substitute ice cream for cinnamon buns. A single burger served at a famous fast food eatery contains 1,000 + calories. Fast foods do not contain a single, natural, chemical-free ingredient - not one. The amount and variety of chemicals concentrated in mall meal creates a sensory blitzkrieg. The caloric cost is staggering. Multiply the caloric cost with the chemical contamination and then eat this type of food three to five times a week for ten consecutive years and you have a problem.

A recent study indicated that the biggest single expense connected with the raising of children was (and is) fast-food purchases. In the long years it takes to rear a child from infancy to adulthood, this study showed that fast food purchases outrank spending for both clothing and education. Buying fast food and taking it home to the kids is so prevalent in dual income families that over the long haul you spend more feeding junior Happy Meals than you do clothing him, or sending him to private school. No wonder most American kids are little estrogen time bombs and eventually morph into teenage estrogen factories.

Chris Hardy: Pro-inflammatory manufactured foods are making us obese and inflamed.  These artificial ingredients are not directly estrogenic. Soy products, pesticide-contaminated vegetables and grains, hormone injected animals, are all pro-estrogenic. Artificial foods make us fat and contribute to increased insulin resistance, increased oxidative stress and increased inflammation. The resulting obesity and oxidative stress/inflammation creates a highly estrogenic state and devastates the previously fertile male.

Along with plummeting sperm counts, let's not forget the unspoken epidemic of erectile dysfunction. A recent study showed that 76% of men reporting erectile dysfunction are obese. Men in America are steadily becoming more obese and steadily becoming sterile - science is now connecting the dots and realizing that there is a direct connection between estrogen and obesity and sterility: manufactured foods cause obesity. Adipose tissue sets in motion estrogen production; excess estrogen promotes more obesity - round and round it goes...

Marty Gallagher: The massive ingestion of fast food, processed food, refined food and food made in factories will, over an extended period of time, transform the eater into a sickly, feminized, weak, bulbous human. Cruising food courts around the country leads one to the conclusion that perhaps we are creating a new species of man: inflamed and prone to sickness, neutered men and overly feminized women. There are now successive generations of fast food eaters, estrogen-drenched parents begetting estrogen-drenched children. Over time this morphs a species.

Chris Hardy, There is estrogenic danger lurking in our environment.  Many pesticides used on grains produce estrogen-like properties within the human body.  This further disrupts sperm production and testosterone production. Eating non-organic produce and contaminated grain products doses us with chemicals.  Run-off from contaminated soil into water supplies is problematic. Eating animals fed contaminated feed is problematic. Environmental estrogens, endocrine disruptors, are fat soluble, meaning they can be stored in body fat. The larger your body fat reservoirs the more extraneous environmental toxins your body can store.

  • Soy products are a source of excess estrogen: Soy is portrayed as a healthy alternative to diary; this is a myth - soy is unhealthy (for a variety of reasons)! Soy contains phytoestrogens!  Eating large amounts of soy products is a good way to lower free-testosterone, directly and indirectly.

These facts are sprinkles atop an extra-large, super-sized toxic sundae. The obesity epidemic is linked to eating manufactured foods. Obesity and exposure to toxic chemicals are slowly killing our species.
