In the cocoa studies, systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) dropped in the active group as compared with controls; however, in the tea studies, no differences were seen in BP between the 2 groups. The authors point out that while the 2 substances contain similar amounts of polyphenols, the components of these polyphenols differ between cocoa and tea: cocoa is particularly rich in procyanidins, whereas black and green tea are rich in flavan-3-ols and gallic acid. It may be that the polyphenol components in cocoa are more bioavailable, Taubert and colleagues propose.

April 10, 2007 — New recommendations outlining the necessary components for emergency preparedness and standardized treatment protocols in the management of sudden cardiac arrest appear in the April issue of Heart Rhythm. Developed by a task force sponsored by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the new guidelines are designed to help schools prepare for and respond to cardiac emergencies that happen on the athletic field.

This list comes from a young member of the fitness world. I’m a junior in college studying to be a trainer, and I plan to get my CSCS this summer. In addition, I’m the creator and co-host of The FitCast, a podcast where I have the best in the business discuss training and nutrition. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s jump into it.

It’s fairly common for athletes to have pimples, cuts, and abrasions on their skin. So how do you know when it might be MRSA and should be referred to a doctor or hospital for a more complete evaluation? Here are some warning signs to look for and ask about when deciding whether a wound requires medical intervention: • Longer than normal healing time • Any increase in size • Unexplained or unusual pain or sensitivity • The presence of pus or a pustule • Induration (hardness) • The sensation of heat • Abnormal swelling or redness • Red streaks around the lesion • Abnormal coloratio

They are undeterred by the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, liver damage, cancers, strokes and blood clots and headaches and cramps and nausea and baldness and acne and sterility and increased breast size in males, shrunken testicles, stunted growth and many more." -- Doug Robinson, "No sweat? Teens are swept up in roid rage," Deseret News, June 11, 2002.

Credit to www.elitefts.com David Adamson and I were driving to the IPA Nationals this past weekend talking training (yeah we’re pretty passionate about what we do) when the subject of training women with heavy weights came up. I’m in my ninth year at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as the head strength and conditioning coach, and David has been in strength and conditioning for three years. This is a subject we deal with every year regardless of how much training information is available to the public.
